Jean Cocteau’s Beauty And The Beast

Shot of The Beast carrying Beauty upstairs in Jean Cocteau’s 1946 fantasy
“Love can turn a man into a beast. But love can also make an ugly man handsome”

Jean Cocteau both wrote and directed this striking screen adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. A clear influence on Disney’s 1991 animated classic, Cocteau’s film is based on Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s version of the fairy tale. Beaumont herself had adapted the story from Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve, who published La Belle et la Bête in 1740.
